The Latin American cinema traditions remain one of the least-explored aspects of hispanic cultural studies in the North American academy, which tends to concentrate its film scholarship almost exclusively on the Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano (NCLA) of the 1960s and '70s or the thematics of more commercial movies of the last several decades, to the exclusion--with the occasional exception of Mexican popular and genre cinema--of anything prior. If similar-sized lacunae were present in literary studies they would representa wide front for scholarly exploration, but in the case of film studies the difficulty of access to the works poses a major problem. Unlike literary texts, many films, even acknowledged classics, are impossible to locate through "legitimate" channels. Some, nowhere near all, can be had through importation, but in a world of region coding and PAL vs. NTSC incompatibilities, this can pose a great problem for those who wish to bring Latin American cinema into the classroom but do not have the technical knowledge and hardware to do so.
